Improvement of Peak Integration in Capillary Electrophoresis: Reference Data Set No. 1

by | Apr 22, 2026 | Video Article

Introduction

  • As biopharmaceuticals grow in complexity, traditional peak integration algorithms are increasingly struggling to keep pace, particularly in Capillary Electrophoresis (CE), where intricate sample profiles expose the limits of conventional approaches.
  • Reference data emerges as a promising path forward, offering an objective basis for testing and comparing automatic integration strategies across different software platforms.
  • This article documents a rigorous consolidation process led by a large team of renowned CE experts, providing a transparent and community-validated resource for the field.
  • The work also confronts the often-overlooked variability in manual integration head-on, highlighting its practical consequences for analytical reproducibility.

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Access ready-to-use reference data and practical guidelines applicable to both software development workflows and analyst training programmes.
  • Explore the variability inherent in manual peak integration and discover evidence-based strategies to meaningfully reduce it.
  • Understand exactly how the reference data was consolidated, validated, and benchmarked directly against automatic integration performed by state-of-the-art software.

About

Marlon Krompholz completed an apprenticeship as a pharmaceutical technician at Bayer AG before studying pharmacy at TU Braunschweig, both with honours. Since January 2025, he has been a licensed pharmacist and PhD student in pharmaceutical analysis within the research group of Prof. Dr. Hermann Wätzig at TU Braunschweig, Germany. His work focuses on Capillary Electrophoresis and has already been presented at several international conferences, including CE Pharm and HPLC.
